Can I Use Disney Infinity 2.0 Characters on 3.0

We're in full Star Wars fever across the globe, mostly due to the imminent arrival of the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and that's something that may cause plenty of people to look at Disney Infinity 3.0 with different eyes.

The game allows you to play three adventures based on Star Wars, including Twilight of the Old Republic, Rise Against the Empire and, after December 18, The Force Awakens. But Star Wars is not the only point of interest when considering Disney Infinity. Between versions 1.0 and 2.0, we got to experience adventures with several Marvel and Disney characters, something that is sure to gather curiosity from children, parents, and players of all ages.

But there is a problem. Disney Infinity is a complex ecosystem that feeds off a base, adventures, discs, figures and worlds, and all of that can be a bit overwhelming at first. That's where this guide comes in, as a means to easily explain the basics and answer some of the most frequent questions.

GAMES:

There are three Disney Infinity "games "- 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 -, each relating to a different Toy Box. In addition to the Toy Box, each edition is compatible with the respective Play Sets. Version 1.0 is associated with Disney films, 2.0 is directed to Marvel's heroes and villains, while 3.0 will be the Play Set of choice for Star Wars fans.

Where are they available?
Disney Infinity 1.0: PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS.
Disney Infinity 2.0: PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U.
Disney Infinity 3.0: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, iOS, Android.

What are the major differences between versions?
The console versions operate with a very similar structure, and the content is virtually identical (except technical differences). Versions for mobile and PC platforms work differently, since they are free-to-play. For the PC you can buy digital versions of both the Play Sets, and the figures. As for the mobile version, it only allows you to explore the Toy Box.

What if I buy the digital versions on console?
You can buy Disney Infinity from each respective platform's online store, which will give you access to the Toy Box of that particular game. However, to access the figures, the Play Sets and the Power Discs, you will need to buy the base separately, or have one from a previous game.

What is a Starter Pack?
The Starter Pack is the ideal package for those who have never invested in Disney Infinity and intend to start now. It includes the corresponding game, a play set, two or three figures, and the base. For example, if you buy the normal Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack, you will have access to the figures of Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker, the Play Set of Twilight of the Republic, and a base. There are also special versions that include more figures and Play Sets.

And after I buy the Starter Pack?
Almost all of Disney Infinity content can be purchased on its own. Play Sets, figures, worlds for the Toy Box, and Power Discs; all can be purchased in packages or individually, if you already have the game and base to place them.

All this is shareable between consoles?
Yes, provided they are for the same game. Ie all figures, Play Sets and Power Discs of Disney Infinity 3.0 will be compatible with any version of Disney Infinity 3.0, regardless of console.

DISNEY INFINITY BASE

The Disney Infinity Base is the platform where you will place the figures, the Power Discs and the Play Sets. There are several types of bases, depending on the platform you want to play on. Most use a USB connection, while the PS Vita connects via Bluetooth and can only hold a single figure, whereas most bases allow for two figures (and two players).

If you already have the base from Disney Infinity 1.0, you don't need to buy it for 2.0 or 3.0, for example, and it is also transmitted between platforms. The PS3 base will work on the PS4 and vice versa. Same for Wii and Wii U. But strangely, the Xbox 360 is not compatible with the Xbox One, and PlayStation isn't compatible with Xbox.

PLAY SETS

The Play Sets are adventures or campaigns that can be used in their respective games. For example, the Toy Story Play Set can only be played on Disney Infinity 1.0, while the Avengers Play Set is only compatible with 2.0. You can also only play each Play Set with the associated figures. For instance, you cannot play the Twilight of the Old Republic Play Set with Mickey.

This also means that some consoles have limited content. For example, you can't play the Disney Infinity 1.0 Play Sets in the PS4 or Xbox One, since that game never actually came out for those consoles.

Play Sets list

Disney Infinity 1.0:
- Toy Story in Space
- The Lone Ranger
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- The Incredibles
- Monsters University
- Cars

Disney Infinity 2.0:
- Marvel's Spider-Man
- Marvel's The Avengers
- Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Disney Infinity 3.0:
- Inside Out
- Marvel Battlegrounds
- Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic
- Star Wars: Rise Against the Empire
- Star Wars: Force Awakens

TOY BOX

The Play Sets may be Disney Infinity's great adventures, but for many players, the main attraction are the Toy Boxes. These are a surprisingly complex level and world editor, bursting with possibilities. It is in this game mode that all the figures are compatible, as long as they are compatible with the game version in question.

The items of the previous Toy Box are also compatible with the latest, allowing you to build worlds with greater variety and possibilities. There is a whole community dedicated to creating worlds for Disney Infinity's Toy Box, many of which are available for free download.

What are Toy Box Games?
The Toy Box Games are mini-games that you can buy specifically for the Toy Box mode, and there are only four: Assault on Asgard, based on Thor; Escape from the Kyln, based on Guardians of the Galaxy; Brave Forest Siege, based on the animated film Brave; and Stitch's Tropical Rescue, based in the Stitch universe. The Toy Box Games were only released for Disney Infinity 2.0 and are considerably more basic than the levels in each Play Set, and most can be replicated in creation mode.

What are Expansion Toy Box Games?
These are Disney Infinity 3.0's version of the Toy Box Games, but they are of a higher quality, halfway between the Toy Box Games from Disney Infinity 2.0 and the regular Play Sets. So far Disney launched two Toy Box Expansion Games: Speedway, which introduces a number of tracks and a Kart style mini-game, and Takeover, which tells the story of how several villains took hold of the Toy Box worlds.

POWER DISCS

The Power Discs are accessories that you can purchase separately. Before Disney Infinity 3.0, Power Disks were purchased in blind packages, and their contents were random. A bit like collecting trading cards. After much criticism, Disney changed the format, and now you can see what Power Discs are included in each package. The Power Discs exist in three formats, which you see below.

Abilities:
These discs are circular and should be placed below the figures you will put on the base. They are compatible with the Toy Box and the Play Set adventures, but some are only available for the corresponding character. For example, you can unlock the black suit Spider-Man, invoke the aid of Mace Windu in Star Wars, or gain more experience with the hat Mickey wore in Fantasia. You can use up to two discs per character simultaneously.

Toys:
These discs are hexagonal and should be placed where you usually fit the Play Set. This means they are only compatible with the Toy Box. Basically they serve as a series of accessories you can use, like weapons and vehicles, including ships like the Y-Wing Starfighter from Star Wars or the magic carpet from Aladdin.

Customisation:
These discs are also hexagonal, like the Toys. With customisation discs you can change the Toy Boxes to sky boxes, or apply new features to the game world, changing the textures to fit the chosen theme. You can create a world similar to Lion King's savannah, or change the background to look like the inside view from Iron Man's suit.

FIGURES
The figures are the heart of the Disney Infinity experience, and besides appealing to an unavoidable impulse to collect them all, they also determine which character you can control. If you want to play with Captain Jack Sparrow, with Spider-Man, or Darth Vader, you will need to collect the respective figures.

How does the compatibility of figures work?
The latest version of Disney Infinity can always run the figures that were released before it, while older versions are limited to the figures up to that edition: Disney Infinity 1.0 figures are compatible with 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, Disney Infinity 2.0 figures are compatible with 2.0 and 3.0. Disney Infinity 3.0 figures are only compatible with 3.0.
